A Picture Paints A Thousand Words Art Contest!A Picture Paints A Thousand Words Art Contest
What it's all about
We are looking for the best story told through an image. There is a timeless saying 'A picture paints a thousand words.' We don't just want a thousand words, we want a short story captured in a single image.
This contest is made possible by Enrico Casarosa from Pixar, who donated his time and talents to inspire DeviantArt's members!
Enrico Casarosa is an Italian artist living in the USA, and has a lot of experience behind him. Before directing La Luna, Enrico worked as a story artist. He has been with Pixar for about ten years, and his work is featured in Cars, Ratatoullie and Up. Previously he was at Blue Sky Studios where he worked on Ice Age. La Luna is Enrico's first foray into directing, and the short is eagerly anticipated worldwide, to be shown in cinemas before Pixar's new feature film, Brave.

"Take Only Photographs, Leave Only Footprints." - Urban Explorers Creed
Sometimes it's easy to forget the things around us that were once iconic and useful. In everyday life that could include a multitude of household objects, bits and bobs, clothes, gadgets - all sorts. But in Photography - a specific aspect of Photography - people close doors and board up buildings sometimes with little or no notice. They erect a fence around that old asylum and ship everything out or they install security guards at the boundaries of an army camp. Those places get forgotten and one day there will be nobody left that will remember them. That's where Urban Exploration comes in.
I'm not telling you to go out and scale the wall of your nearest derelict hospital in the name of photography. It takes a certain kind of person (and agility!) to do that anyway, but there are many depths to U
Bittersweet Damageall i really know
is i'll break your heart,
even though i can't bear
the thought of leaving
for a million twisted reasons.
so set me on fire
with day-old gasoline
and tear me up
like worn out jeans.
then i'll stick to you
like a poisonous oil spill
because i never knew
what's good for me.
Silhouettessomewhere in new york,
there is a boy who's remembering what it's like
to open your eyes to subway lights and believe yourself
he used to soak cocoons in coffee dregs
and salute 2am clouds when they splashed down
into the Hudson, searing plastic carts and paper cards.
he is stardust without the confidence to wink,
sawdust scattered on glassy skies.
everytime he feels like his shoulders are crumbling,
the gritty feel of not-letting-go-not-yet-not-here-not-now
falls across his tongue, and he's able to taste the sunset
he is drunk on determination when he pulls out his keys
and starts searching for the answers that he knows
he's never gonna find.
it's too soon to say never but too late to say always,
and being in between makes him weightless.
he's never felt so bulletproof.
tonight he's staring up at the metal moon
and wishing that she had the consistency
(somewhere in apartment c, he's just
put down his pen and is waiting
for her to notice that there are words

"We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us." - Winston Churchill
The general theme this week is focusing on Architecture and in particular how to drum a bit more enthusiasm for noticing what's around us and capturing it successfully on camera. Architecture is profoundly unavoidable whether we like it or not! It's there in everyday life through work, socialising, living, politics and everything in between. The Architecture Gallery here on deviantART is vast and contains a great range of inspiring artworks.

I carried out a poll. It was slightly biased I must admit, because in one of the options I tried to brainwash people into choosing Sony as their preferred make of camera but you guys just wouldn't bite. As it stands now the poll has a close high rating between Canon and Nikon - with (surprisingly) Canon coming out top. So what is that makes You prefer the make of camera that you use? What are its quirky features and endearing parts? If you want to see the full results of the poll
